Afghan athlete Omidullah Alizada, based in Kakuma Refugee Camp, competes at the Asian Savate Championships in Kathmandu, promoting inclusion through sport.

At the Asian Savate Championships in Kathmandu, Afghan athlete Omidullah Alizada delivered an address to officials, athletes, and guests, reflecting both his personal journey and the broader experience of displaced communities in sport.

Originally from Afghanistan and currently living in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, Alizada combines his competitive career with coaching activities, teaching Savate to young people in the camp and promoting structured sport as a tool for development.

Following his address, Alizada presented copies of his book, Ambassadors of Peace, to each delegation, as well as to Gilles Le Duigou and Ibrahim Konate, who represented FISav at the event.

Savate as a Tool for Development

In Kakuma, access to organised sport remains limited. Through his coaching, Alizada contributes to creating opportunities for young people to engage in disciplined training, supporting both physical activity and personal development.

His participation in the Asian Championships reflects the role of Savate in providing pathways for athletes from diverse and challenging environments to access international competition.

“Borders may divide the earth, but they cannot limit our dreams.”

A Message on Resilience and Inclusion

Addressing officials and athletes, Alizada highlighted resilience as a defining element of the refugee experience, while underlining the importance of inclusion in sport.

“Being a refugee is not a story of loss. It is a story of resilience.”

His remarks emphasised that sport can offer continuity, purpose, and visibility for displaced athletes, reinforcing shared values within the international Savate community.

Acknowledging Support

Alizada recognised the support of key individuals and partners who have contributed to his participation. He expressed appreciation to Dr Julie Gabriel and the International Savate Federation for their continued support since 2023, enabling his participation in international events as a refugee representative.

He also acknowledged Jack Hewson of PBS NewsHour for his consistent personal support.

Support was further provided by Asif Karim, former captain of the Kenya national cricket team, whose contribution made participation in the championships possible.

Additional thanks were extended to Muharram Sakhizadeh for facilitating training conditions, as well as to members of his support network throughout his journey.

International Representation

Alizada also participated in the Asian Referee Seminar held prior to the Championships, describing it as a valuable and inspiring experience that provided an opportunity to further develop his knowledge and skills in officiating.

Competing in Kathmandu, Alizada represents not only his own sporting objectives but also a wider group of displaced athletes seeking access to international competition.

His participation highlights the importance of inclusive pathways within Savate and reinforces the role of sport in connecting communities across borders.
