The Helsinki Savate Club has announced the death, at 43 years, of Mika Kalliomaa, a much-loved member of Suomen Savate Ry - Finland Savate Federation.
He started training in Savate in 1995, and showed a natural talent for the sport. After a few years of practice, Kalliomaa qualified as an international judge and instructor in France.
He was one of the few Finns who have participated in Savate Combat at the international level. Kalliomaa was the founder of the official Savate Federation in Finland (Suomen Savate). A respected judge, in his white collared shirt, he became a sight increasingly familiar in international championship competitions, while also working as a trainer for the Finnish team.
Mika's professional and responsible method of coaching impressed everyone. He had a clear and confident style, and always had time for his students after practice. He was known for good humour and joy.
Mika will be missed by all who knew him. Our condolences to his family and friends.
