The Federation Internationale de Savate is aware that athletes may have an illness or medical condition which requires them to take specific medications.
Many prescribed medications may contain substances listed on the WADA Prohibited List. This list is updated annually and should be checked regularly. All athletes must be aware of the list and the substances and methods which are prohibited. If a prescribed medication contains a substance which appears on the list, the athlete must complete a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) application in order to receive authorization to take the necessary medicine. All affected athletes intending to participate in World or Continental Championships are required to apply for TUE before the deadline for nominative inscriptions to the championship.
Authorization will only be granted if the TUE application criteria are met:
- The athlete would experience significant health problems without taking the prohibited substance or method;
- The therapeutic use of the substance would not produce significant enhancement of performance;
- There is no reasonable therapeutic alternative to the use of the otherwise prohibited substance or method;
- The requirement to use that substance or method is not due to the prior use of the substance or method without a TUE which was prohibited at the time of use.
For the TUE to be granted, all four criteria must be met.
A TUE may be granted either by the International Federation, in this case, FISav or the National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO) of the country to which the athlete belongs. FISav will accept TUEs granted by NADOs in good standing with WADA.
For detailed information about the TUE process and requirements, read the article How to Apply for for an Athlete’s Therapeutic Use Exemption which describes the process.
